Frequently Asked Questions

You may have some questions about the notarization process. Here are some questions to frequenly asked questions. If your question isn't answered below, please reach out!

What do I need to get something notarized?

  • An unexpired, government-issued, photo ID

  • A completed document leaving the signature for the notary appointment

  • Make sure the name on the document matches the name on your ID

  • All signers need to be present

  • Be aware of what you're signing

  • Be willing to sign

  • Know what type of notarization you need

  • Payment

How do I know what type of notarization I need?

Three common types of notarizations are acknowledgements, jurats, and copy certifications. If you aren't sure, contact the person or agency requesting the notarization. If you aren't sure, you can also contact a lawyer for guidance. It is illegal for a Notary Public to give advice or recommend one notarial act over another.

What documents can I get notarized?

Almost any document can be notarized. And in order for a notarization to be completed, the document needs to have the correct notarial language for your state. If it doesn't, the notary will provide the correct language. However, exceptions are vital records such as a birth, marriage and death certificates. Notaries can't make or certify copies of these records. You must go to the government agency that issued the certificate to get copies.

Why are you charging? I thought notaries were free.

Cost varies by state. In Virginia, a notary public may charge up to $10 per notarial act. These acts include taking and certifying acknowledgments of writings, administering and certifying oaths, and certifying affidavits, depositions of witnesses, and true copies of documents. Virginia notary publics are allowed to charge a reasonable travel fee in addition to the fee for notarial acts. Multiple notarial acts could be required during one appointment.

Can I go to my bank to get something notarized?

Of course! Some banks offer notary services as a benefit to their account holders. Just be aware that they may not notarize documents that aren't related to bank business or transactions. For example, banks have declined to notarize a Will or Power of Attorney.

Will you come to me for the appointment?

Yes!! As a mobile notary, I don't have a physical location. I travel to an agreed-upon location to complete the notarization. I travel to residences, hotels, hospitals, nursing homes, coffee shops, etc.

How long does a notarization take?

It depends on what needs to be notarized. If it's one signer signing one document, 10 minutes. If I'm notarizing a home loan package for two signers requiring 8 signatures, then that could be closer to 30 minutes. My priorities are to establish the signer's(s) identity, confirm the correct notarial language is on the document, that my notary stamp is placed correctly, and my notary journal is filled in completely.
